Past, Present & Future Pride

This year marks 56 years since the Stonewall Riots. A powerful act of resistance led by brave activists, many of them Blak and Brown trans women, who stood up and said: enough is enough. Pride is a time to celebrate identity, love, and community, and to keep fighting for the justice and equality we’re still striving for.

We honour the strength, creativity, and joy of the LGBTQIA+ communities. But Pride is more than a celebration, it’s a protest. A reminder that queer and trans people, especially trans women of colour, have always been at the forefront of change.

Right now, trans rights are under attack through legislation, misinformation, and targeted violence. These are not isolated incidents; they're part of a wider effort to silence LGBTQIA+ voices and strip away hard-won rights.

At WIFT Vic, we stand firmly with our trans, nonbinary, and gender-diverse communities. We believe in a screen industry and a world where queer stories are not only told, but their voices are centred, respected, and celebrated.

We encourage all WIFT Vic members and supporters to get out and support Pride Month anyway you can. The MQFF Pride Month program is a vital platform for bold, authentic LGBTQIA+ storytelling. Screen culture has the power to shape public understanding and drive real change. When LGBTQIA+ voices lead, we all move forward.

Check out what’s on at the Victorian Pride Centre and tune in to Joy FM to stay connected and up to date with the latest in the Queer sphere.

Let Pride be both a celebration and a promise: to uplift queer and trans voices, challenge injustice, and build a future where everyone can live freely, safely, and authentically.

We have put together a collection of resources, shows and films to dig your teeth into as well. You can return to many of these items again via our resources tab.

Celebrate with love, resistance, and solidarity.

Keep creating!
